Migraines are a big problem for a lot of people in the United States. About 42 million Americans get them. Often, people don’t realize they have migraines. They think it’s just a sinus headache. But, more than half of those with migraines are women, and these headaches can really mess with their daily life. Whether it’s work, school, or taking care of the home, migraines make things harder.

Prevent Migraines Before They Start

There are a few things everyone can do to try to stop migraines before they start. One of the most important is drinking water. Not having enough water can cause a migraine. So, it’s key to drink lots of water all the time.

Being less stressed and sleeping well are also big deals. Ways to reduce stress include meditating, listening to music, doing deep breathing exercises, relaxing muscles, and planning your time wisely.

What you eat matters too. It’s best to stay away from certain foods and drinks. Processed foods are a no-go. Also, beans, dried fruits, chocolate, some cheeses like parmesan, feta, and Swiss, should be avoided. Foods with nitrates like hot dogs, deli meats, and sausages are bad news. Very cold things like ice cream and cultured foods such as yogurt, buttermilk, and sour cream should be off the menu. Adding foods rich in magnesium, like oatmeal, peanut butter, almonds, sunflower seeds, eggs, and cashews, is a smart move because not having enough magnesium can lead to headaches.
