The Real Deal About Walking for Your Health

Walking is a pretty good exercise. Dr. Marie Kanagie-McAleese, who works with kids at the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health, says walking uses a lot of your muscles. When you walk, muscles like your thighs, calves, and even your arms and belly get a workout because they help move your body. Ali Ball, who knows a lot about exercise and works at OSF HealthCare, says walking is also good for your heart because it makes it beat faster for a while.

But here’s something interesting: walking for 15 minutes can do some of the same good stuff for your heart as running for 5 minutes. That’s what scientists found out in a study.

The Health Benefits of Walking

Walking does a lot for your body. It makes your heart and blood vessels healthier, which means you’re less likely to get heart disease, have a stroke, or deal with things like too much weight, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Even though walking is great, it’s not the only exercise you should do if you want to stay healthy.
