Valuable Lessons for a Long Life from a 95-Year-Old Former Cardiologist from Japan

During a summer visit to Osaka, Japan, time was spent with a 95-year-old ex-heart doctor who is a grandfather. His life, filled with creativity and a focus on community, shows us how to age gracefully.

Here are his eight key practices for a fulfilling, longer life:

Morning Walks

The grandparents start their day early, often walking as soon as 5 a.m. They usually go for 30 minutes to an hour, aiming for at least 7,000 steps. Whether it’s on the hilly paths near Minoh Falls or around Ikeda, these walks energize their mornings.

Personalized Exercise Plan

After their walk, he spends time on a tailored exercise routine. This includes stretching and a combination of strength and balance exercises. He changes it daily to suit his fitness level and avoid working too hard.

Engaging in Social Media

Post-exercise, he uses social media, like Facebook and Instagram, to connect with family and friends. This is important to him as it helps fight the loneliness that older adults often feel due to being isolated.
